Draft for the free beta
This page is a plain-language draft written before launch. A lawyer will review it before SmartACB charges for anything. If something here is unclear, email us and we will fix the wording. What SmartACB does
SmartACB calculates the adjusted cost base of identical property and the resulting capital gains and losses in Canadian dollars, following the general rules published by the Canada Revenue Agency: average cost per pool, settlement-date tax years, Bank of Canada exchange rates, the superficial-loss rule, returns of capital, splits, and transfers into registered accounts.
What it does not do
It does not know your full situation. It cannot see trades at brokers you have not imported, foreign property reporting, options, short sales, employee stock plans, corporate actions it was not told about, or elections you may have made. Where the rules are unsettled, the app chooses one interpretation and flags it; a professional may choose differently.
Before you file
Compare the proceeds in the app with your T5008 slips and the totals with what your accountant expects. Review every warning the app shows. If anything is unclear, ask a CPA. SmartACB's operator is not a tax professional and the numbers shown are estimates for information only.
